art + power
art + power was the umbrella name for an influential art collective formed by Bristol's acclaimed 'Artists First' group and other groups working together during the 2000s. Formed in 1996 by Dave Richmond and Jade West, art + power was instrumental in the creation of landmark public art commissions, provided a functioning group studio facility, and was featured heavily at the High Time Festival - Bristol's first disability arts festival, in 1997. The art + power group disbanded in 2005 with the group's move out of Spike Island, however, Artists First again emerged as a major voice for the disability arts movement, contributing work to video collections curated by Picture This, and multiple group exhibitions across the UK. Funding cuts and lack of support during the COVID-19 pandemic sadly put an end to the Artists First Collective in 2020; however, its 30-year legacy is now celebrated at the NDACA ( the National Disability Arts Collection and Archive), which features work from each contributing artist in the group dating back to the 1970s.
