Meanwhile at the castle, Paul and the captain are hunting down a thief disguised as a ghost. He scares the maids and steals vegetables from the garden. Sophie misses Mrs de Fleurville and Jean. Jean is bored in Paris and convinces his father to let him spend the rest of the summer in Fleurville. At the castle, Sophie protects Leon, the scared braggart, while Paul gets rid of a band of hooligans who are annoying a simpleton. Paul teaches Leon the principles of a fight. Jean and Sophie become closer, even in their dreams. Sometimes Sophie thinks that her stepmother is only a ghost.
